"Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) involves using fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of skin. Sound appealing? Not so much. But this minimally invasive treatment—whether it's done in-office by a trained aesthetician, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon, or at home using a dermaroller (a small, handheld paint roller coated in tiny needles)—is virtually painless and incredibly effective. "The micro-injuries you create stimulates the body's natural wound healing processes, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production, therefore reversing as well as preventing signs of aging," says board certified dermatologist and RealSelf contributor Sejal Shah, MD. (It works the same way lasers do, only you're injuring the skin mechanically instead of using heat or light.) Believe it or not, microneedling has become hugely popular among skincare fanatics—Vogue is calling it the next big thing in anti-aging. (Check out these game-changing anti-aging ingredients taking the skincare world by storm.)"
Because each treatment is slowly introducing microscopic pores into the skin, the process of repairing your skin with Microneedling requires multiple treatments. Each treatment reduces the scarring and stretch marks on your skin. Over time you will likely notice significant improvements in the appearance of your skin.
Notice this quote, again from the same article on Microneedling in Reader's Digest magazine:
"In a 2009 study on the effects of microneedling, nearly 100 percent of acne-scarred participants reported a marked improvement in the visibility of their acne scars."
Microneedling is done in multiple sessions. A small handheld tool is rubbed over your skin. The tool makes thousands of tiny invisible micro-tears in the shallow outer layer of your skin. Each session provides a small improvement in skin quality. A single session will have slight improvement, but as you do two, three, four, five and more sessions you will see that each session will continue to improve the quality of your skin. You'll notice that scars, stretch marks, and wrinkes become less visible with each treatment.
Surprisingly no! The needles in the tool are so small and the micro-tears are so shallow in your skin, that you don't feel much at all. However, we also numb the area being treated with a topical numbing cream, to ensure that you have a very comfortable experience. Of course, pain tolerance levels vary from person to person, but with the numbing cream and the nature of the procedure, most patients will feel very little pain at all.
